SanskritAppreciationHour 2/4/2014 Gita Dhyana 1-6


  1. Tomorrow we will complete Gita Dhyana Shlokas, and if we complete them, we'll make a start on Shiv-Tandav-Stotra

  4. सा उत्तीर्णा खलु पाण्डवै: that river was surely crossed by the Pandavas कैवर्तकः the boatman [being] केशवः Keshava
  5. अश्वत्थाम-विकर्ण-घोर-मकरा (that river of which) Ashvatthama and Vikarna are the fierce alligators>>
  6. कृपेण कर्णेन वेलाकुला (that river whose) tide/coast or current/breakers are Kripa and Karana still not sure why instrumental used!
  7. शल्य-ग्राहवती (that river of which) Shalya is the crocodile (ग्राहः) कृपेण कर्णेन वेलाकुला >>
  8. जयद्रथ-जला (that river of which) Jayadratha is the water गान्धार-नील​-उत्पला (that river of which) Shakuni is the blue-lotus>>

  10. The 'battle river' is described by some compounds. Let's examine them. भीष्मद्रोण-तटा (that river of which) Bhishma and Drona are the banks
  11. रणनदी - is a figure of speech called रूपक which corresponds to a metaphor. If it was a similie उपमा there would be an इव in the middle>>
  12. Let's start with the verbal action: पाण्डवै: by the Pandavas खलु indeed सा she/that रण-नदी battle-river उत्तीर्णा was crossed>>
  13. दुर्योधन आवर्तिनी सा उत्तीर्णा खलु पाण्डवै: रण नदी कैवर्तकः केशवः
  14. भीष्मद्रोण-तटा जयद्रथ-जला गान्धार-नील​-उत्पला शल्य-ग्राहवती कृपेण कर्णेन वेलाकुला अश्वत्थाम विकर्ण घोर मकरा >>>

  18. वसुदेवसुतम् the son of Vasudeva देवम् Lord कंसचाणूरमर्दनम् the killer of Kansa and Chanura देवकीपरमानन्दम् the highest bliss of Devaki >>

  22. Again, the verb first: वन्दे I revere, puts the object of the verb (Krishna) &adj for him in the accusative/dviteeyA vibhakti.
  23. Now the next verse: वसुदेवसुतम् देवम् कंसचाणूरमर्दनम् देवकीपरमानन्दम् कृष्ण वन्दे जगद्गुरुम् Note his father is वसुदेव so Krishna= वासुदेव​
  24. सर्वा upanishad not सर्वः as rightly pointed out by
  25. >> (of) गीता अमृतं महत् the great nectar of the Gita (which is the) दुग्धम् milk
  26. पार्थ​: Arjuna वत्सः (is) the calf सुधीर् भोक्ताः the wise are enjoyers >>
  27. सर्वः उपनिषद​: गाव​: all the upanishads are cows दोग्धा the milker (is) गोपालनन्दनः (उपनिषद् is a fem noun.See form:
  28. अस् to be (अस्ति/स्तः/सन्ति) Apply appropriate vacana to each fragment for full sentence.The upanishads ARE cows,the milker IS Krishna etc
  29. In this verse the verb is implicit and often in Sanskrit, it is not stated in the sentence. It is अस् 'to be'
  30. Now we move onto the next verse सर्व उपनिषद​: गाव​: दोग्धा गोपालनन्दनः पार्थ​: वत्सः सुधीर् भोक्ताः दुग्धम् गीता अमृतं महत्
  31. Pl do ask questions if you have any. This is supposed to be a forum where you can clear your doubts :-)
  32. ज्ञानमुद्राय (one handis in) gyanmudra कृष्णाय Krishna गीता-अमृत दुहे the milker of the ambrosia/drink of immortality
  33. प्रपन्न (for those) fallen at your feet पारिजाताय the wish fulfilling tree तोत्त्र वेत्र a goad/cane एक पाणये in one hand (pl note dative)

  38. Verse 3: प्रपन्नपारिजाताय तोत्त्र वेत्र एक पाणये ज्ञानमुद्राय कृष्णाय गीता अमृत दुहे नमः I love the idea of प्रपन्नपारिजात

  40. येन त्वया by whom/you प्रदीपः lamp भारततैलपूर्णः filled with the oil of the Mahabharata ज्ञानमय​: constituted of wisdom प्रज्वालितः was lit.
  41. Some of us have to make a start at the bottom of the ladder :-) Bad karmas from previous and this birth, I'm sure :-)
  42. फुल्ल -अरविन्द आयत-पत्र- नेत्र​ (I bow to you) whose eyes are elongated, like the petal of a fully-blossomed lotus >>
  43. नमो Sस्तुते namah astu te salutations to you व्यास-विशालबुद्धे Vyasa of the expansive intellect>>
  44. It's easy to remember - just remember ॐ नमः शिवाय​ - the object of namah will be in chaturthi vibhakti/dative case :-)
  45. Again we start with the verbal action नमो Sस्तुते namah astu te salutations to you verb नम् means to bend/bow & puts object in dative case
  46. Verse 2: नमोस्तुते व्यास विशालबुद्धे फुल्ल -अरविन्द -आयत-पत्र- नेत्र​ येन त्वया भारततैलपूर्णः प्रज्वालितः ज्ञानमय​: प्रदीपः >>
  47. A lot of us chant these verses, but I for one did not know what the words meant till I learned It takes you to another level!
  48. If no one has a doubt, we'll move onto the next verse
  49. मध्ये महाभारतम् in the middle of the Mahabharata. Translation of verse 1 ends.
  50. पार्थाय प्रतिबोधितां - the enlightener of Arjunan व्यासेन पुराणमुनिना ग्रथितां composed by the ancient muni Vyasa >>
  51. And the Gita was given to Arjuna and us by whom? भगवता नारायेण स्वयम् by the Lord Narayana himself >>
  52. (I meditate on you) भगवतीम् - you the goddess अष्टाध्यायिनीं you the one who has 18 chapters
  53. (I meditate on you) अद्वैतामृतवर्षिनीं you, the showerer of the nectar of advaita
  54. (supply 'I meditate on you' in your mind) भव द्वेषिणीम् you, who are the enemy/destroyer of existence (in the sense of birth/rebirth) -
  55. That puts all other descriptions of 'her' in the accusative case/dviteeyA vibhakti. Let's see>>>
  56. Let's start with the verbal part- त्वाम् अनुसन्धामि, I meditate/concentrate on you. अम्ब, भगवद्गीते, BhagvadGita, Mother >>
  57. अद्वैतामृतवर्षिनीं भगवतीम् अष्टाध्यायिनीं अम्ब त्वाम् अनुसन्धामि भगवद्गीते भव द्वेषिणीम् Verse 1 ends.Translation follow. Pl listen to audio
  58. Verse one: ॐ पार्थाय प्रतिबोधितां भगवता नारायेण स्वयम् व्यासेन ग्रथितां पुराणमुनिना मध्ये महाभारतम् >>>
  59. I won't go into the process of anvaya we deeply as but the all important tip of 'find the verb first' will be followed.Let's begin
